Issues in Indian History, Politics and Society
Author:Harbans Mukhia
The book for the most part comprises an “aware” citizen's responses to events that from time to time engulf our society, nation and polity and of which we citizens always remain at the receiving end. The events concern us all, even though we seldom have a hand in their making.
The writings collected here are at times immediate responses to events, at others well considered, but always with understanding that has evolved over four decades in the professional career of a historian/teacher. Some of the issues analysed go back a long time into the past. The most frequently occurring issue is the specific Indian phenomenon of communalism in its several facets. As our society evolves, so does our understanding of it.
Also included in the collection are a few reviews of books, especially those with wider reach than ones which are the preserve of academics.
Harbans Mukhia taught medieval History for 44 years at Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru. He is the founder-Editor of The Medieval History Journal.
