SOUTH-SOUTH DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION: India and South Asia

Global Development Cooperation architecture has traditionally been dominated by the developed countries of the North. However, during the last few decades, a number of southern nations, particularly India and China have emerged as major donor nations. Development cooperation has always been an integral part of India’s foreign policy since independence.

This book seeks to highlight the evolution and growth of South-South development cooperation, India’s emergence as a major Southern donor, the various instruments of India’s development partnership with six South Asian countries in the neighbourhood and much more. A few policy recommendations to improve the effectiveness of such development partnerships are also provided. The book further throws light on how China has been aggressively using development cooperation to gain influence in South Asia, particularly in India’s neighbourhood.

This book is intended to arouse interest among academics, researchers in international relations, foreign policy makers and all those hoping to see India achieve its global and regional aspirations by utilising the goodwill the country has gained through its various development cooperation initiatives over the years.

Rini Rachel Abraham holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering. While preparing for the Civil Services Examination, she found her true passion in social sciences, particularly International Relations. Pursuing her interest in the subject, she completed her MA in Political Science, cleared NET and did her PhD. from the University of Kerala. Alongside her teaching and research pursuits, she has authored several articles in reputed academic journals. Her areas of special interest include South Asia, West Asia, Indo-Pacific and India-China studies.
