Description

This book brings together scholars practising Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, Economics, History, Philosophy, Cultural Studies, and Gender Studies to rethink the changing relationship between democracy and the State in India. Moving beyond the familiar emphasis on formal institutions and psephological speculation, the volume turns to the socio-economic, cultural, gendered, everyday and global dimensions through which democratic politics is produced and contested. The chapters traverse strikingly varied terrain: the gap between “the people” and the electoral majority, Jayaprakash Narayan’s near-forgotten critique of the centralised state, secularism as democracy’s companion concept, the appropriation of “ordinary citizenship” in India’s privatised townships, vote-buying in village councils, the politics of social action, deliberative democracy and free speech, the erosion of academic freedom, caste and patriarchy in Hindi cinema, the masculinist logic of the security State, the unfinished struggle for LGBTIQ rights, and India’s ambivalent quest for a democratic world order. This eclectic collection of essays seeks to equip readers with the conceptual tools needed to map the nuances of and new possibilities for democratic politics in India.
