Description

This book examines how India’s moral framework has evolved from ancient times to the present and questions whether Indian morals are truly fragile or simply transforming under modern pressures. It traces morality from the dharma-based, hierarchical and patriarchal ethical system rooted in religious texts, through the colonial and reformist period that introduced modern ideas of rights, rationality, and social justice, to the nationalist movement’s attempt to blend tradition with modern ideals. After independence, constitutional values such as equality and secularism reshaped moral thinking, but traditional social practices and selective moral outrage persisted, revealing deep contradictions between ideals and reality. The book argues that this coexistence of hierarchical social morality, constitutional ethics, political pragmatism, and moral overconfidence creates a fragile moral landscape, while also offering reflections on the future direction of Indian society.

Review

“The most civilized people are as near to barbarism, as the most polished steel is to rust …Nations, like metals, have only a superficial brilliancy…” Antoine Rivarol, an 18 th Century French Royalist writer/journalist.

“Are Indian morals, indeed, fragile or merely transforming under the pressures of globalization, technological innovations and mobile population? … the political domain reflects, perhaps, the most visible moral erosion … and … excessive use of macho-nationalism … The fragility lies not only in moral decline, but also in moral over-confidence”… The book has ably brought out these contradictions … – Dr. Pramod Kumar, Chairperson, Institute for Development and Communication, Chandigarh

About the Author
After teaching English language and literature for a few years in a leading College of repute in North India. J.R. Kundal author had a brief stint with the Bombay Collectorate of Customs. Thereafter, as an officer of the All India Service, he served the State of Punjab, India, in different capacities for a little over three decades, including a brief exposure in the Government of India, New Delhi. Post retirement, as a Member of the Punjab Governance Reforms Commission, he productively contributed in making the governance system citizen- friendly by making day-to-day services mandatorily available to the citizens within a prescribed timeframe. As a part of the Governance Studies Unit at the Institute for Development and Communication (IDC), Chandigarh, he continues to enjoy writing on different facets of the human behaviour and the Society. His earlier work “Tunnel With A Dead-End’! The Caste Cesspool and The Indian Society” deprecated the pernicious, scripturally-ordained casteism. “Musings” comprehensively critiques the degeneration of the morals and values, and the unwholesome tentacles of materialism which have sapped energy from the very vitals of what would have been a genuinely civilized, humane and egalitarian society.
