Description
Lu Xun’s four early essays The Power of Mara Poetry, Human History: An Explanation of Monistic Study of Phylogeny by German Biologist Ernst Haeckel, Lessons from the History of Science and One-sidedness in Culture are selected and translated from Chinese. Lu Xun wrote these essays in classical Chinese in early twentieth century and published around 1918 when his short story A Madman’s Diary in vernacular Chinese was published in New Youth magazine. These essays are significant as they provide insights on Lu Xun’s early thought that shaped the framework of his writing in vernacular literature of modern China.
Manik Bhattacharya taught Chinese at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has earlier published Heritage and New Culture: A Study of Lu Xun’s Writings.
Manjusha Bhattacharya worked as a translator in the Chinese Unit, External Services, All India Radio.
