Asoka, a son of Bindusara and the third sovereign of the Mauryan Dynasty ascended the throne of Patlipura (BC 273) and undertook the government of Indian empire. He held the government for about 40 years. The numerous inscriptions recorded by Asoka are the leading authority for the events for his reign and administration.
